TEMPERING

Tempering is a technique used to reinforce glass, and consists in a thermal process whereby special tensions are produced within a sheet of glass in order to improve its resistance characteristics.  

The tempered glass sheet, once broken, is reduced into tiny fragments that are not sharp, and which are therefore not dangerous.
